When we become Secular Franciscans, we commit ourselves to the SFO Rule. Everyone should understand,
because of what they have learned in formation and continuing formation, that commitment to the Fraternity
is a very important part of the Rule.
As Secular Franciscans, we must examine our consciences to be sure that our priorities are in order. Please
remember that family obligations come first, next comes our livelihood—meaning our jobs, then comes
the fraternity. This means that our commitment to the Rule asks that we put all other commitments in fourth
place after family, work and fraternity!
That level of commitment does not only apply to fraternity meetings; it is also true of “extra” activities sponsored
by the fraternity or activities which we attend as a community. Recent examples of this would be our Brunch,
our Day of Recollection and the Mass for the Feast Day of St. Francis. If you were missing from these occasions
without good cause, please examine your commitment as a Secular Franciscan, and make every effort to organize your
priorities to fit what is asked of us by the Rule.
Please be sure to call to let us know if you will not be able to attend a fraternity gathering.
Our Brunch and our Day of Recollection were both very successful. These occasions presented a wonderful
opportunity for us to fulfill our Franciscan calling to share in community with the fraternity.
Remember that Community is a very important part of our vocation!
